Australian car lovers now only get one major car show a year, it alternates between Melbourne and Sydney and unless you have the money to flit from city to city most people only get to see one every second year. Car makers have responded to this by making sure every show is a first class affair.

Maserati GranCabrio Sport is a harder-edged variant of the standard model and produces even more power from its 4.7-litre all-alloy V8.

BMW’s Vision Efficient Dynamics is purely a concept, but carries hints to the far future of automobiles. And achieved its goal of being so way out it became the cover car on the motor show program - any PR person’s dream...

Lamborghini continues its usual extreme shapes with a new model called Aventandor. Powered by a huge V12 engine it has acceleration like a motorbike, leaping from a standstill to 100 km/h in a flashing 2.9 seconds.

Lexus’ first supercar, the LF-A made its debut at the Melbourne Grand Prix. Only nine are being imported to Australia and all have a deposit on them.

Bentley’s revised Continental GT looks similar to the original model, but in fact is an all-new model.

Walkinshaw Performance SS Super Ute II has a big-power supercharged engine.

Dressed up Holden Colorado looks super tough.

Volkswagen Scirocco is finally coming to Australia.

Hyundai Accent has neat, Euro-style lines.

FPV concept of the next Australian supercar drew a lot of attention with its all-black look.

Toyota’s next sports car will be based on the F86-II Concept and will come with a Subaru boxer engine and rear-wheel drive. It's due here in mid-2012.

The Toyota Prius v is a compact people mover based on the existing Prius underpinnings.

The Toyota Prius c Concept is a small city-oriented hybrid.

Mazda gave us a foretaste of its upcoming CX-5 compact people mover by flying not only its design concept called Minagi, but also the chief designer, Ikuo Maeda, and members of his design team to Australia to discuss the car over with motoring journalists.

Mazda’s Maeda-san also previewed a future sedan design in an ultra-sleek model called Mazda Shinari.

Subaru gave buyers the chance to see the upcoming new Impreza for the first time in right-hand-drive format.

Toyota’s revised HiLux features a strong frontal appearance.

The Australian International Motor Show in Melbourne runs from Friday July 1 until Sunday July 10. It’s not open to the public until 6pm on the first day, doors open at 10am every other day. Closing times are staggered, being 9pm on July 3, 4, 5, and 6; and 10 pm on other days with the exception of the last Sunday when the show finishes at 6pm.

Of particular interest to many are the Family Days on Saturday July 2 and 9. These feature special entertainment to keep the kids amused while mum and dad contemplate their new transports.

Further details, including ticket prices and packages, are available from www.motorshow.com.au/
