The world is changing rapidly, and nowhere more so than in the automotive industry. Witness the launch of the new Holden, or rather new Chevrolet, Malibu sedan. Once upon a time any major new Chevrolet would have made its world debut in the USA, yet three days before the medium-large sedan was shown to the American and international media at the New York Auto Show, it was unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show.

China’s growing at such a rapid rate that its annual car sales may well exceed those in the USA within five to ten years. Hence the release of an iconic brand outside its home country.

Interestingly, the Chevrolet Malibu was introduced in New York by Mark Reuss, a one time president of Holden in Australia, now president of GM in North America. Reuss didn’t spend a lot of time in Australia before his promotion but he did pick up a good understanding on what Aussies like in their cars. The rear end is particularly exciting in that it carries strong hints to the semi-retro Chevrolet Camaro that’s selling up a storm in the USA right now. Note in particular the square lights and the inbuilt tail spoiler.

Power for the US version of the Malibu comes from a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. It’s likely the Holden variant would also be offered with a turbo-diesel.

Could the Holden Malibu be built in this country on the same assembly line that is soon to be shared by the Holden Commodore and Cruze? That’s hard to say, and Holden is certainly not prepared to comment on this. Time will tell...
