2011 Mitsubishi Pajero RX Limited Edition

As the Japanese car industry starts to pick up pace again following the dreadful tsunami, Australian importers are vying for their share of the market. Mitsubishi Pajero has been a major player in the passenger 4WD market - as opposed to to the truck-type 4WDs - and has introduced a limited edition Pajero as part of the fightback.

Called, without a great deal of imagination, the Limited Edition Pajero RX, this new model is aimed at top end 4WD buyers, so is based on the already well-specified Mitsubishi Pajero GLX.

It has a recommended retail price of $57,990 for the 3.8-litre petrol automatic and $59,990 for the 3.2-litre diesel automatic. This is only $1350 over the cost of the Pajero GLX on which the RX is based. On-road costs have to be added, but you’re still getting a lot of 4WD at a pretty modest price.

2011 Mitsubishi Pajero RX front

Mitsubishi’s Limited Edition Pajero RX is very much a look-at-me model, with lots of chrome plating - on the distinctive new radiator grille, around the foglights, in strips on the bumper bar protector.

Chrome is also lavished on the exterior mirror housings, the door handles (inside and out) and the highlight trim on the side steps. If that bright chrome look isn’t enough, there is a silvery finish to the roof rails, the rear spoiler and in detailed areas of the rear bumper.

The 18-inch alloy wheels to a special design add to the Limited Edition package and there are RX badges just in case anyone hasn’t noticed this special model.

The bright sporting look continues inside the Mitsubishi Pajero RX, with a titanium look for the instrument panel surround and the window-switch panel. The gear selector lever gets an alloy look.

However, the dressed up interior won’t be visible to outsiders because privacy glass is part of the Limited Edition setup.

On a practical note, the Pajero RX has the Mitsubishi Multi Communication System that includes Satellite Navigation with Voice Command, a reversing camera, rear-seat air-conditioning and an automatically dipping interior mirror.

2011 Mitsubishi Pajero RX Interior

Mitsubishi Pajero is a large station wagon that provides smooth, quiet cruising on the road and competent running when taken off sealed surfaces. Its Super Select 4WD system lets you use 2WD or 4WD under any circumstance. Thus it can provide safe traction on wet sealed roads if you opt for 4WD, or lower fuel consumption on dry dirt roads if you go for 2WD. Or any number of permutations between extremes.

Standard features already fitted across the entire Mitsubishi Pajero range include ABS brakes with EBS (Electronic Brake-force Distribution), stability and traction control, cruise control. There’s an MP3-compatible CD player; a dashboard display that includes a compass, altimeter and barometer.

This latest Mitsubishi Pajero is just the thing for bargain hunters who want a family wagon that’s more competent than most vehicles in this class in off-road conditions.
