Though it’s the world’s best known maker of sports and racing cars, Ferrari isn’t afraid to experiment with new ideas in style and mechanical layout. Just take a look at the stunning new Ferrari FF to witness a revolution from the revolutionary Italians in Maranello.
With styling by the Pininfarina studio, this brave new machine in the world of Ferrari has an extremely long bonnet and a cabin that stretches all the way to the rear of the body, the latter to provide seating for four people.
Ferrari FF is driven by all four wheels, surprisingly a first for the company. The reasoning is that with 670 horsepower being produced by a race bred 6.3-litre V8, this Ferrari needs all the grip on the black stuff that it can get. Powering all four wheels lets this big machine (it weighs over two tonnes with four blokes on board) catapult from rest to 100 km/h in only 3.7 seconds on its way to a maximum speed of 335 km/h.
Ferrari tells us its new design of four-wheel drive weighs only half as much as comparable systems on other supercars.
Incidentally, the ‘FF’ in this Ferrari’s name refers to the 4WD system and the fact that it has seats for four people.
The Ferrari FF will make its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show on March 3rd. We will be attending that event and will bring you details of the car, together with Australian pricing and release dates when they are announced.
On the Grand Prix racing front, Ferrari is paying homage to the country of its birth. Italy is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2011, so Ferrari, the marque synonymous with Italians’ love of high-performance and racing has called its 2011 Formula One car the Ferrari F150. Unveiled in Maranello at the end of January, the Ferrari F150 title contender will be driven by Fernando Alonso and Filipe Massa, the pilots of the 2010 Ferraris.
