Genesis Breaks Cover, But Not Down Under

How's this for a tease.

The good news is this is Hyundai's stunning new Genesis Coupe at the MIMS.

The bad news is its not coming to Australia.

It's here to showcase Hyundai's design and engineering capabilities.

The model on display was a left hand drive production variant from the US market.

It is easy to see the design DNA flow through from the old `coke bottle' Hyundai S Coupe.

That where the similarity ends.

The Genesis has just gone on sale in the US, along with the Genesis sedan, and the South Korean manufacturer hopes it will be the catalyst for their turning point in the North American market.

The car we snapped at MIMS featured an all-aluminium 231 kW 3.8 litre V6 Lambda RS engine ... RS stands for Racing Sport.

It's a far cry from the S Coupe.

Peak torque is a massive 361 Nm at 4700 rpm and this South Korean rocket hits 100 kmh in just 6.3 seconds. This puts it in the same ball park as the Subaru WRX.

The wedge-type silhouette gives it classic sports car lines and proportions. Enthusiasts would also like the look of the Brembo brake calipers.

Weight distribution is 55/45 and the four seater machine has a 2820 mm wheelbase.

A modified version of the Coupe has been developed in the US and will take part in drift challenges and Pikes Peak Hill climb

The rear wheel drive Genesis, yes rear wheel drive, was alongside the new Hyundai i30 wagon, all new i20 and the i10 blue and i30 blue concept cars.
