Grand Vitara Is Genuine 4WD

Suzuki has been a major player in the small 4WD field for four decades and is recognised worldwide as a master operator in this field. Its biggest accolades are handed out due to the fact that the Japanese marque makes genuine 4WDs, not pretend ones that look the part but aren't really intended to go into real 4WD territory.

In its latest iteration, Suzuki's Grand Vitara has been further improved over its honourable ancestors. Naturally it still comes with a tough body that can cope with real off-road work. Though the body is no longer sitting on a separate chassis, but uses car-like monocoque, there's plenty of added strengthening underneath to give it a rugged build. And, of course it has a two-speed transfer case to give enable torque multiplication to the wheels and the ability to crawl along at ultra-low-speeds.

For the 2009 season the Grand Vitara has been given a facelift. The radiator grille has a more aggressive look with a stronger emphasis on the central ‘S’ (for Suzuki) logo than in previous models. Inside, there are changes to the dashboard, revised instrument designs and upgrades to the interior design and trim.

But the big changes are underneath the bonnet. The four-cylinder engine at 2.4 litres is significantly larger than before. A modern, twin-cam unit, it produces a respectable 122 kW, with torque being 225 Nm at a relatively high 4000 rpm. However, there's good torque from about 2000 rpm upwards and the engine worked well in the day-to-day driving to which we subjected it over the last week.

We had it doing everything from carting kids’ presents home to pass them onto Santa, to making the inevitable trip to the tip with dead palm fronds that are such a feature of the Gold Coast at this time of the year. Then there were the runs on the beach with the excited grandsons in the back seat.

Sand seems to be the natural habitat for Suzuki 4WDs, their light weight and good ground clearance letting them sail along in situations that can cause hassles for large 4WDs and SUVs.

The really striking feature of the four-cylinder Suzuki engine is its refinement. It’s as smooth and quiet as many a six-cylinder engine of a decade back. Our test Grand Vitara had a four-speed automatic transmission. While it works well enough it’s starting to feel a bit old in comparison with some later designs from competitors.

Interior space is good and this mid-sized 4WD can carry four adults in comfort, three children with ease. There's good stowage space inside, with deep door pockets that can carry large drink containers and a centre console that, while on the small side, has plenty of depth.

Some may find the Suzuki Grand Vitara less refined in its general ride and handling than newer models, particularly when they hail from Europe. But keep in mind that the Suzuki is a genuine 4WD and the slightly lower level of creature comfort makes sense. You soon become accustomed to the feel of this vehicle and those who appreciate it for what it is will quickly fall in love with the adventurous lifestyle it provides.

Priced from $24,990 the Suzuki Grand Vitara offers excellent value for a fully imported Japanese vehicle and is well worth adding to your list of possible buys. All the more so if you are genuinely interested in taking it into off-road areas to get the best from its considerable 4WD engineering.
