Hyundai used it's Melbourne launch of
the new ix35 to preview two more models which it will launch in the
first half of 2010 – the small i20 and the Sonata replacement, code
named the XF. This was the first time the XF has been seen in
Australia.
The car's resemblance to European
marques from VW and Mercedes is unmistakable.
The XF is sold in the US as Sonata and runs an upgraded variant of
the Theta 2.4 litre petrol engine connected to a six speed
transmission. It is a stunning looking vehicle. The car unveiled in
Melbourne had badging of GDI – standing for Gasoline Direct
Injection.
The Australian specifications are yet
to be released – and we not able to get photographs inside the car
– but the engine will be the 2.4 litre noted above as well as a six
speed automatic transmission. The car will come also with six
airbags, stability control and a number of luxury appointments.
The 120 will be launched in Australia
in April and for some time will run parallel with volume-selling
Getz. In the longer term the popular Getz will be phased out with
possible two small cars – the i20 and possibly the i10 which is
under consideration, replacing Getz.
The i20 pictured here had a 1.6 litre
badge on it but more than one engine is under consideration which
could also mean a 1.4 litre. Both the i20 and the XF feature the
new-look hexagonal grille.
