Mercedes-Benz revived the concept of a four-door coupe in 2003 when it introduced an all-new model called the CLS-Class. That car has been a huge success, but time marches on and a new CLS will make its worldwide debut at the 2010 Paris Motor Show in October.
The idea behind the CLS is to provide a sleek sporty model but with the convenience of back doors. Let's face it the baby boomers aren’t getting any younger and those who can afford a car like this often want their friends to come along for a ride in the back.
Since the launch of the CLS-Class we have seen four-door coupes either introduced or foreshadowed by Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, Porsche and Volkswagen, so the Mercedes gurus were certainly on the right track.
Keen to keep at the head of the field, Mercedes-Benz has released its first official photographs of the upcoming CLS. These shots show a car that follows the overall stying theme of the original, yet takes it in an entirely new direction.
Whereas the first model featured smooth, almost sensuous curves, the new one comes with a much more aggressive look. In particular, the main radiator grille is more upright and has a large central bar with a big three-pointed star in its centre. The lower grilles are also big and bold. Without too much imagination you can see similarities to the recently arrived SLS Gullwing when the CLS is viewed head on.
The side profile continues the coupe swoop of the first CLS, but adds a raised side strip that starts at the top of the front guard and curves up and over to the rear ones.
