You know those “golden memories” you have? You don’t have lots of them. They are normally of innocuous events, simple things at the time until viewed in retrospect. Then they seem to be bathed in a golden light. Well a Saab convertible, my girlfriend and me created one of those memories the other afternoon.
I just happened to have a new Saab 9-3 convertible on test for the day so I picked up a very long term girlfriend (she hates being called an old girlfriend) and off we went. Her opening statement on jumping in the car was, “Great, I’ve never been in a car without a top on.” She quickly changed the wording to a car without a roof…
It was autumn and threatening rain but someone was smiling on us. The whole time we were out we had sunshine and the roof was down the entire trip. We headed south from the Gold Coast on coast road that runs through little villages packed with Labour Day tourists. Lots of people threw openly envious looks as we purred past slowly, openly enjoying the freedom of the wind in our hair, basking in the autumn sun and the open skies above.
After a great lunch we decided to take the old Round Mountain Road over to Murwillumbah. The lovely little Saab came into its own on the windy road. We had Frank Sinatra playing and someone had set up the curves on that road to match the beat of New York, New York. The Saab responded like I was dancing with it.
As we headed up over Tomewin and down into the Currumbin Valley, Frank was turned up even more and we sang along at the tops of our voices with the afternoon sun now dappling through the lush landscape and bathing us in golden light. Simply gorgeous. We arrived back home to reality and got the roof up quickly with the push of a button just before it rained.
I had to give it back the next day – I nearly cried!
Two girls’ opinions of the Saab 9.3 convertible: solid and safe, but not too big and heavy. Responsive, sexy, loves curves, can dance, great seats (as always in a Saab, I just love my 9-5!), all the gadgets you want, terrific sound system, and looks hot.
Tip for the ladies – don’t forget your lip gloss with the roof down and caps are much easier than a scarf.
