Volkswagen's Shining Convertible

The European car stylists can be a funny mob at times. For years they laughed at the Australian drivers’ concept of having white cars, saying that white was the colour of commercial vehicles and gave cars a downmarket appearance.

Then about three years ago, possibly after spending some time in our land downunder, the Euro stylists decreed that white was the new black and it suddenly became the height of fashion over there.

To its credit Volkswagen was one of the early adopters of the new white; and has now taken the theme further into the fashion stakes by introducing a special edition Eos convertible called the White Night. (Perhaps, someone should have suggested using Knight instead of Night, but that's another story.)

The Volkswagen stylists have embraced their white theme with plenty of enthusiasm, going all the way by contrasting the brilliant Candy White paint against Deep Black on the roof, radiator grille and door mirrors. There are black ‘White Night’ badges on the door-sill panels to let others know yours isn't just any old Eos.

They backed off a little with the colours of the 18-inch ‘Budapest’ alloy wheels, going for a silver-and-black look rather than trying for the full white-and-black treatment. Which probably makes sense as over-cute wheel colouring can look tacky.

The larger wheels are further enhanced by the use of lowered sports suspension in this special Eos.

Inside, the seats are trimmed in a black nappa leather, the door, side trim and black steering wheel have light coloured seams to add to the effect. The interior trim stripes, including those around the audio front-end unit, are painted in the same Candy White as the body.

The Volkswagen Eos convertible features an interesting roof that can either be used as a conventional sunroof that can be opened and closed at any speed. It can also become a fully open car when the hardtop is powered down into boot.

The VW Eos White Night is priced at $53,990 with the 103 kilowatt turbo-diesel, and $55,990 when the hot 147 kW turbo-petrol engine is installed. These prices are $3500 over those of the standard cars. Note that dealer and government charges have to be added.
